Independence anniversary: Fun seekers besiege Lagos parks - PUNCH

Fun seekers from different parts of Lagos on Tuesday trooped out to different amusement parks in the metropolis to celebrate Nigeria’s 53rd independence anniversary with their families.

Some of the fun seekers told the News Agency of Nigeria that the public holiday enabled them to relax with their families and friends.

They also said the celebration provided them with the opportunity to thank God for His protection throughout the 53 years of self-government.

Mr. Waheed Ilesanmi, a tourist, said the holiday had given him the opportunity to celebrate the anniversary with his immediate family.

“So, I believe that the best thing for me and my family is to come around here at the Freedom Park and have a nice time.

“We are also gathered here to thank the Almighty for keeping us alive to witness our dear country at 53. It is worth celebrating because I believe that one day, the economy of the country will get better,” Ilesanmi said.

A Lagos-based business woman, Mrs. Fatimo Bakare, said the economy would experience further growth with the eradication of corruption, poverty alleviation and free education for the citizens.

Bakare said government needed to fight corruption and reduce borrowing, to achieve economic development and national transformation.

“Nigeria is blessed with natural resources and a huge wealth to enable it cater for the citizens.

“Borrowing constitutes an economic burden. We need to fight corruption, alleviate poverty and stem unemployment to enhance economic growth, “Bakare said.

Mrs. Temitope Alade, a contractor, said that Nigerians had no choice than to be part of the celebration because it was their country.

“We are celebrating because we have the hope that our tomorrow will be better than our today,’’ she said.

Alade, however, advised the Federal Government to pay more attention to providing security for the people, youth empowerment, poverty alleviation, quality education and the development of national infrastructure.

A large turnout of fun seekers was also noticed at the Oshodi Heritage Park, the Peace Amusement Park, Ajah and the Rosella Amusement Park, Ikotun, where many also visited to enjoy the celebration.
