(HEART COPY) - I was the rejected stone, now his family wants me as the corner stone! (2)

Continued from last week.
Dear Taiwo,
When my mother fell in labour, my mother’s parents called my father’s parents because my father travelled to India on business with the money my parents gave him for business. His parents promised coming but they did not show up. My mother was discharged from the hospital two days after I was born, she had no complications or health issues, but being a first timer, the doctors wanted to be sure she was very okay before she was discharged.
Throughout her stay in the hospital, my paternal grandparents did not show up.  Initially, my parents thought nothing of it, until when my father who was also informed as soon as my mother was going to the hospital and when I was born stopped calling.
Because he was away from the country, my mother had to go back to her parent’s house when she left the hospital. The initial arrangement, however was that, she would stay at my father’s place and return to her parents after the naming ceremony, then, the wedding would take place.
Unfortunately, things couldn’t work out as planned because of his trip, that however, notwithstanding, none of his family members showed up. My grandparents were baffled because of their attitude and reaction and decided to go and see for themselves on the morning of the eighth day what was happening.
My grandparents waited till the eight day because they kept calling his parents since my mother and I returned from the hospital, they never said they wouldn’t come, they kept promising to come but they never did.
That morning, my uncle and aunty were asked to go and see what was happening. They returned home with shocking news; my father was actually around in the country and another baby was being named in his parents’ house. This was so because; he was residing in one of the flats in his father’s house.
It was obvious the baby being named was his because my father and the baby’s mother wore matching apparel and those who did not know who my aunty and uncle were told them what was going on.
They came back and gave my maternal grandparents the news; there was no way they would have kept the news from my mother because they eventually had to name me without my father’s family. As a result of which my mother fell ill, she went into coma and later depression and almost lost her life. I did not feed on my mother’s breast, because she wasn’t healthy enough to take care of me. But to the glory of God, my grandparents took good care of me.
When my mother became well enough, both of us travelled to England, where we lived for some years together. My mother returned home and I stayed back to finish my studies. I however came home to Nigeria on holidays when my mother or grandparents couldn’t come to see me.
On one of my trips home, my mother told me all that surrounded my birth. I learnt that my father never came over to check on my mother and I and when my grandparents eventually got to speak with his parents, their excuse was that, they would rather accept the boy and his mother rather than  I and my mother.
My father never for one day asked after me. You can imagine, all the while my grandparents were helping him to be somebody; his other woman was already living with him as wife. My mother refused to marry another man. She threw all her strength into making me who I am today. I was brilliant and excelled in my studies. I studied to become a neurologist. I returned home for my National Youth service Corps so that I can practice in my father land. After my youth service, I returned for further studies and came back the best in my field.
Few months ago, I attended to a patient with a funny personal history. I said funny because, we shared the same surname, birthday and blood group. Initially, I didn’t think anything of it, but it was kind of funny, so I told my mother about it. She asked that I ask more questions, especially from his mother who was always coming to the hospital with him.
His mother innocently gave me all the details I needed and when I relayed these to my mother, in the presence of my maternal grandmother; my grandfather is late, they both confirmed that my patient is my half brother. I got curious and asked his mother questions without telling her who I was.
I learnt that Ayodeji, that’s his name, had been born with these medical issues which began to manifest few months after he was born. His father spent almost all the money he had trying to get medical and spiritual help. When he didn’t get well; his father walked out of the house, leaving both of them.
I asked for her husband’s details, she gave me and I called to see him. He came over to the hospital to see me and you need not be told that he is my father; the resemblance is uncanny and few other people who saw us together mentioned this fact. I joked about it that it was just a coincidence.
I asked him to come back the following week. When I got home I told my mother, who said that she wasn’t interested in seeing him. I told him who I was on his next visit and he was shocked. You know the way men are. Initially, he wanted to call my bluff but I told him some facts. He said my mother was responsible for all the ill luck that happened to him. I smiled and told him that posterity is only judging him as my mother had no time for him.
We started meeting and I didn’t tell my mother. The only thing my mother told me was that I should stay clear of Ayodeji and if possible I should transfer him to another specialist. Since then, I stopped telling her what transpired between me and these people.
Along the line, I also met some of his siblings and his mother. They all apologised for their brothers misdeed and all asked for a chance and opportunity to apologise to my mother. I also learnt that after my father ran away from Ayodeji and his mother, he had not remarried neither have other children. In fact, his mother is all over me and wants to identify with me at all cost.
After establishing some facts, my father owned up to all that he did. He confessed to having hurt my mother deeply and the fact that he had been to pillar and post and all he has been told was to go and seek my mother’s forgiveness.
He wants me to facilitate a meeting between them, but I can’t even tell my mother because I know the way she feels about even the mention of my father’s name.
She had been through a lot; I don’t want to add to her mistery but I really want things to be okay between then especially my mother. Please, Monica, how do I go about this, help me.
