JUDICIARY workers and members of the Benin branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Friday said they would no longer work, following the absence of judges in the state. The judges stopped sitting on Thursday over the kidnap of Justice Daniel Okungbowa on Wednesday.
The Benin branch of the NBA resolved Friday to boycott all courts in the state until Okungbowa was released unhurt and unconditionally by his abductors.
Also yesterday, the state chapter of the Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSON) said they would stage a protest march to the offices of the Governor, Directorate of State Security (DSS) and the Commissioner of Police to register their displeasure over the kidnap of the High Court judge.
JUSON, at the end of its emergency meeting, directed all its members to stay at home from Wednesday next week if the judge was not released seven days after his abduction.
Courts to be shunned by the NBA until Justice Okungbowa’s release include Court of Appeal, Benin Division; Federal High Court; all High Courts, Magistrate Courts, Customary Courts, and District Customary Courts.
The NBA, in a communiqué issued after an emergency meeting and signed by its Chairman, Oriane Akere, called on the state government and security agencies to live up to their responsibilities and take proactive measures to stop kidnapping in Edo from further degenerating.
It was further learnt that security operatives from the DSS and Police in Edo and Delta States were working together to ensure the release of the judge.
However, as at the time of filing this report, no ransom demand or communications has been made to the judge’s family by the kidnappers.
Justice Okungbowa is the Chief Judge of Edo State
