Members of the boko haram sect
The
Nigeria Bar Association has said it is awaiting reports of the
investigations by the National Assembly and the Police into last week’s
controversial killings of people suspected to be members of the Boko
Haram sect, at the Apo Legislative Quarters in Abuja.
The State Security Service had claimed
that, acting on a tip-off, its agents invaded the premises of some
uncompleted buildings at the highbrow area of the Federal Capital
Territory, where arms were allegedly buried.
A statement by the Deputy Director,
Public Relations, Marilyn Ogar, said as the operatives attempted to
exhume the arms, they were attacked by gunmen, prompting a retaliatory
action.
Eyewitnesses had, however, cried foul.
Speaking to our correspondent on Friday,
the President, NBA, Mr. Okey Wali, said the association had contacted
the SSS to obtain information on what happened at the scene.
He described the matter as sensitive as it involved terrorism and killings.
He said, “We have to be sure that these
are extra-judicial killings before we can say anything. In the mean
time, what we have done in the NBA is that I made contacts personally
with the SSS to find out what happened.
“We have to await the conclusion of
their investigations. Considering the sensitive nature of the issue,
after the SSS, the police and the National Assembly have concluded their
investigations, we will take a well-informed position.”
He noted that the association did not
have the powers to carry out private investigations. He said it would
comment on the investigation by the statutory bodies.
During the gun duel, eight suspects were
killed on the spot, while two others reportedly died later from the
injuries they sustained. The SSS said it had arrested 12 suspects,
leaving about 10 injured and hospitalised.
